Arctic Ocean Diversity (ArcOD)

Various — Arctic Ocean Biodiversity (ArcOD) is a Census of Marine Life (http://www.coml.org/) project aimed at coordinating research efforts examining the diversity in each of the major three realms: sea ice, water column and sea floor, including fish, mammals and birds. This program will consolidate what is known and fill remaining gaps in our knowledge: it is lead for the Arctic Ocean diversity clusterwithin the International Polar Year. The ArcOD database holds more than 70,000 records, divided in five databases: 1) sea ice, 2) water column, 3) sea bottom, 4) fish and 5) sea birds. Each ArcOD dataset, and the accompanying metadata is available for downloading in its entirety through this website. Datasets are arranged by realms. Use of any use of datasets for publication MUST acknowledge the scientist/organization contributing the data, as well as the ArcOD site as the distributional source.

Meteorological Ocean Buoys (MOBs) data

Barber; Klaus Hochheim; Lauren Candlish; Mukesh Gupta; Natalie Asselin — The buoy was left in the open ocean, ice edges, near the mouth of the MacKenzie River delta for a minimum of 2 hours (maximum of 13 hours) to record wave spectrum parameters. The buoy also records its geographic location with a GPS receiver. The buoy has a Vaisala sonic anemometer on top of it which measures wind speed and direction. The wave data files are in a proprietary format that can be opened using the Waverider program supplied by Datawell Inc. Wind data is in DAT format. No air or sea surface temperatures are available due to incomplete programming on the buoy.

AOOS and contributors — The Alaska Ocean Observing System¿s mission is to improve our ability to rapidly detect changes in marine ecosystems and living resources, and predict future changes and their consequences for the public good. When fully developed, AOOS will: serve as the Alaska regional node for a national network of observing systems; systematically deliver both real-time information and long-term trends about Alaska¿s ocean conditions and marine life; provide to the public Internet access to cost-free data and information on coastal conditions; and supply tailored products to meet the needs of mariners, scientists, industry, resource managers, educators, and other users of marine resources. AOOS will provide a centralized location for data and information products from platforms such as buoys, providing wind and current speed and direction, wave height, sea temperature and salinity, and more; enhancements to existing NOAA weather buoy data for specialized local needs; processed satellite data providing Alaska-wide information on sea-surface temperature, ocean color (chlorophyll) and wind; geographically comprehensive surface current data from high frequency radar; data about fish, birds and marine mammals, the environmental effects of human activities, and any other information that can be used with the physical data to predict future changes to the ocean ecosystem.

Ocean Biogeographic Information System (OBIS)

OBIS and contributors — OBIS publishes data on behalf of scientists from government agencies, museums, universities, commercial companies, and non-governmental organisations. OBIS is always seeking new contributors. What kinds of data is OBIS interested in? OBIS is a marine biogeographic information system, meaning that we concentrate on datasets that record particular species (or higher taxonomic group) from particular marine locations, at particular times. At present, we can only publish data where the locations are recorded as latitude and longitude, not as place names. Our focus is on high taxonomic quality, so datasets where organisms have been identified by professional or trained biologists are our priority. In the near future, we will be expanding to take in environmental datasets (i.e. coverage of physical, chemical, and geological parameters) that are relevant to understanding the distribution of species. So we are interested in hearing from potential contributors of these datasets, and welcome your contact, but are still in the process building this facility.
